Liquefaction and Cyclic Softening at Balboa Boulevard during the 1994 Northridge Earthquake

چکیده

The seismic performance of Balboa Boulevard during the 1994 MW 6.7 Northridge earthquake was examined through nonlinear deformation analyses (NDAs) using advanced tools to (1) investigate failure mechanism leading ground deformations at this site; (2) evaluate accuracy adopted analysis methods, engineering procedures, and state-of-the-art reasonably estimate horizontal displacements; (3) identify key factors parameters contributing earthquake-induced site. One-dimensional (1D) liquefaction vulnerability indexes (LVIs) permanent displacements Newmark sliding block were also estimated compared against observed after earthquake. geotechnical characterization assessed based on field laboratory data obtained from two investigation campaigns. Transitional probability geostatistics used develop stratigraphic models that capture heterogeneity spatial variability patterns sand-like clay-like soils present implemented in finite difference software FLAC behavior simulated PM4Sand PM4Silt constitutive models, respectively. Sensitivity performed address uncertainties associated with soils, input motions, proportion within soil deposit, strength properties these materials. Results NDAs suggest a compounded effect both cyclic softening led excessive Boulevard. This study sheds light importance appropriate procedures numerical modeling protocols prediction patterns, selection parameters, as well applicability LVIs complex sites.

State of stress before and after the 1994 Northridge Earthquake

The state of tectonic stress in the epicentral area of the 17 January 1994, Northridge earthquake (Mw 6.7) is investigated by applying a stress inversion method to P-wave polarity data from earthquakes in Northridge from July 1981 to January 1994 and from the Northridge aftershocks during January 1994 to December 1995. A 3-D crustal model is used to trace the rays taking off from the hypocenter...

The magnitude 6.7 northridge, california, earthquake of 17 january 1994.

The most costly American earthquake since 1906 struck Los Angeles on 17 January 1994. The magnitude 6.7 Northridge earthquake resulted from more than 3 meters of reverse slip on a 15-kilometer-long south-dipping thrust fault that raised the Santa Susana mountains by as much as 70 centimeters. The fault appears to be truncated by the fault that broke in the 1971 San Fernando earthquake at a dept...

Magnitude of Nonlinear Sediment Response in Los Angeles Basin during the 1994 Northridge , California , Earthquake

The study of nonlinear site response has practical difficulties due to large ambiguities in isolating local response from other competing effects. We chose a sedimentary site LF6 in Los Angeles basin that (1) has the closest reference rock sites available, compared to other stations, allowing an accurate estimation of local amplification, and (2) illustrates clear resonance in the near surface....
